Mills leverage proprietary fibers, processes

It’s been said that consumers are agnostic when it comes to fiber type, that all they care about is how the carpet feels underfoot and how it looks.

While that may be true, mills are nonetheless competing against each other with fibers that they claim perform better or provide greater value. It’s all part of a marketing strategy designed to seize market share.

Following is a sampling of what’s new in the world of fiber.

The Dixie Group

Fiber of choice: Nylon. The performance features of EnVision and EnVisionSD Pet Solutions fiber provides an extended product life—cleanable, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Proprietary technologies and processes: A unique process to TDG’s Fabrica facility in California is beck dyeing. “It is the highest quality dye process,” explained Jared Coffin, vice president of product management, The Dixie Group. “The final product is very clean with low levels of streaking and great side-match characteristics.”

New products/initiatives: TDG is focusing on color in 2024, with an emphasis on piece-dyed nylon carpets offered in a multitude of color offerings.

fiberEngineered Floors

Fiber of choice: PureColor solution-dyed polyester.

Proprietary technologies/processes: High-Def color technology from EF offers sophisticated colorations along with its 4D experience of depth, dimension, durability and design. What’s more, the company’s twistX technology uses a twist multiplier to enhance durability in synthetic fiber. The proprietary manufacturing process provides a plusher, more comfortable underfoot with exceptional durability.

New products/initiatives: Engineered Floors continues to introduce new PureColor products and technologies. EF’s Next-Gen PureColor carpets are made with more filaments and have a larger denier size to deliver an even softer and bulkier feel.

fiberMarquis

Fiber of choice: Marquis’ UltraSoft solution-dyed fiber combines cutting-edge technology with premium materials to deliver a product that exceeds expectations in comfort, durability and aesthetic appeal.

Proprietary technologies/processes: UltraSoft AltTwist technology. This advanced twisting method tightly twists the fibers, resulting in increased resilience and improved texture retention.

New products/initiatives: Ross’ Landing is a new residential carpet launch leveraging AltTwist technology, which allows carpet to maintain its plush feel and luxurious appearance even under heavy foot traffic.

fiberMohawk

Fiber of choice: SmartStrand, which offers permanent stain resistance, spill and soil protection with exceptional durability.

Proprietary technologies/processes: Made in part with renewable plant-based ingredients, SmartStrand is OEKO-TEX certified free from harmful substances. In addition, SmartStrand features Mohawk’s All Pet Protection & Warranty, covering all pets, all accidents, all the time.

New products/initiatives: Tessellation is a SmartStrand residential broadloom carpet style that delivers fashion and performance with high-end patterns and striking colorations. Tessellation is constructed with Mohawk’s XTRA technology, which is designed to provide exceptional cleanability and durability.

fiberPhenix

Fiber of choice: Solution-dyed nylon.

Proprietary technologies/processes: Most Phenix carpets feature Microban, which helps keep floors cleaner by protecting 24/7 against the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.

New products/initiatives: Madras, part of the Phenix FloorEver PetPlus solution-dyed nylon collection, combines an abstract grid design with soft variations of color, which is designed to deliver a sophisticated look. Madras offers Microban surface protection to help keep floors cleaner. Madras is warranted for stairs.

fiberShaw Floors

Fiber of choice: Anso high-performance fiber.

Proprietary technologies/processes: With recent innovations and the launch of Pet Perfect and Pet Perfect+ carpet collections, Anso high-performance PET achieves the durability standards expected of a fiber produced by Shaw Industries.

New products/initiatives: Shaw Floors markets products across consumer-targeted collections featuring Anso fibers. They include the Classics collection, the ultra-durable, easy-to-clean Pet Perfect and comfortable and colorful Anso Colorwall. Anso Colorwall and Classics come with Anso high-performance nylon, and Pet Perfect showcases Anso high-performance PET.

Stanton

Fiber of choice: Solution-dyed polyester.

Proprietary technologies/processes: The yarn is solution dyed, a process in which the yarn is infused with color pigment during the manufacturing process. This premier process makes spills and stains easily removable while maintaining superior colorfastness.

New products/initiatives: The Select Atelier Camelot styles offer a 10-year Pet Guard warranty. The built-in stain protection provides comfort in knowing the carpet can be easily cleaned from everyday messes.

fiberTarkett Home

Fiber of choice: Solution-dyed polyester. Tarkett Home favors this fiber because it is highly durable and naturally resistant to staining and fading.

Proprietary technologies/processes: Tarkett Home’s exclusive fiber, Cloud 9, is noted for its softness as well as its proven resistance to staining and fading. Cloud 9 is durable, pet-friendly and stylish.

New products/initiatives: Tarkett Home has introduced 14 new Cloud 9 styles in 2024. Options range from premium, thick, plush solids to fashionable patterns.
